Delivered container prices in North Carolina.

North Carolina buyers ask two things in the same breath. What does the box cost, and does crossing the state line add something to the bill. The second one is easy: it does not. We count delivery in road miles out from our gate at 5567 Elk Horn Rd in Woodlawn, and the line sits close enough that every North Carolina town on our service list lands inside the free zone.

Every North Carolina town we publish sits inside the free zone

That is not a slogan, it is arithmetic, and the table is the proof. Eight towns, none of them near the edge of the ring.

Miles are road miles from 5567 Elk Horn Rd in Woodlawn, not straight lines on a map. If your town is not on this list, call and we will measure it.

Those runs sort onto four roads. Mount Airy and Winston-Salem are both US-52 south, one just over the line and one down in the Piedmont. Dobson and Elkin come off I-77 on US-601 and US-21. North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro face each other across the Yadkin River on the US-421 corridor. Sparta and West Jefferson go out through Galax and up onto the plateau, West Jefferson a further stretch past Sparta.

Between them that is Surry, Forsyth, Wilkes, Alleghany and Ashe counties: the northwest corner of the state. Winston-Salem is the longest of the eight at about 56 miles, and it still leaves room before the 75 mile line.

North Carolina's 12-foot accessory building rule

Here is what really separates a North Carolina drop from a Virginia one, and it has nothing to do with money.

In North Carolina, an accessory building over 12 feet in any dimension generally needs a permit. Hold that up against a container and it is not a close call. A 20-ft is 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet 6 inches tall, and a 40-ft is 40 feet long at the same width and height. The length alone clears 12 feet by a mile, so in practice the rule catches every box we sell.

That does not mean you cannot have one. It means the permit question starts from a different place here than it does north of the line, and the answer belongs to your county, not to us. Rules land county by county, and a town can be tighter than the county around it.

So make the call before delivery day rather than after one. We will not tell you what your county charges or how long it takes, because we do not know. What we can give you is the questions.

• Does a storage container need a permit here, and which kind? Zoning and building are two desks with two different answers.
• What are the setbacks? How far the box has to sit from property lines, the road, and anything already on the parcel.
• Does it matter that it is not anchored? Ours sit level on foundation blocks, not a poured slab, and that usually matters to whoever picks up the phone.
• Does it change if I cut into it? A door, a window, electrical, or people working inside is a different conversation from plain storage.
• Am I inside town limits or an HOA? Either can be tighter than the county.

Where the county call fits in the order of things

Most people call us first and the county second. Either order gets you there, but one wastes less of your week.

1. Get the delivered number from us. Size, condition, delivery ZIP. It comes back the same day, so nothing downstream waits on us.
2. Call the county with the real dimensions in front of you: 20 by 8 by 8 feet 6 inches, or 40 by 8 by 8 feet 6 inches, used for storage, on blocks, not anchored.
3. Walk the drop spot yourself. A tilt bed wants roughly 65 feet of straight clearance for a 20-ft and about 95 feet for a 40-ft, plus room to back in, and clear air overhead because the bed lifts as it unloads.
4. Then set a date. We confirm one on the phone once we know the ground is firm and the truck fits.

The reason for that order is plain. Our quote costs nothing, and it makes the county conversation specific: exactly which box, on what ground, doing what job. Vague questions get vague answers.

Settle the ground while you are at it. Gravel is ideal and firm level dirt is fine, but soft wet ground is the usual reason a date moves. Doors sit on one end of a standard unit, so decide which way you want them facing.

Why the state line does not move the price

People assume out of state means out of pocket, and that is fair. Plenty of outfits draw a free zone along a border instead of with a tape measure, and plenty of online sellers quote the container in one number and the freight in another, later.

We measure from one gate. The yard is in Woodlawn, in Carroll County, and the state line is a short run south. Mount Airy comes out at about 22 road miles, a shorter haul than the drive from the yard up to our own sales lot in Wytheville. So a box headed for Dobson or Elkin is priced off the same sheet as one staying in Virginia. Same steel, same leveling, same lockbox, same figure. What changes at the line is not your invoice, it is the permit question.

One more thing does not change. There is a real yard behind the number, and you can drive up and open the doors on the container you are buying before you pay for it. Northwest North Carolina is close enough that people do.
