Also called a tunnel container

The double-door container. Doors on both ends.

A standard shipping container has cargo doors on one end and a solid steel wall on the other. A double-door container, also called a tunnel container or a tunnel-tainer, swaps that solid wall for a second set of cargo doors, so both ends open instead of just one. Same genuine steel box, available on a 20-ft or a 40-ft shell, just an opening at each end instead of one.

We don't keep a double-door sitting in the yard the way we keep standard 20-ft and 40-ft units on hand. It's a specialty piece we source to order. If doors on both ends would actually solve a problem on your job, the honest first step is a call to talk through size and timing, not a drive out to look at one on the lot.

What a double-door container actually is.

Every standard container we sell, 20-ft or 40-ft, has its cargo doors on one end only. Walk to the other end and you're looking at a flat steel wall, the same 14-gauge Cor-Ten that makes up the rest of the box. That single door end is completely normal, and for most jobs it never comes up as a limitation.

A double-door container takes that same shell and puts a matching set of cargo doors on the far end too. You'll hear it called a tunnel container or a tunnel-tainer, because with both ends open you can see, and load, straight through the box like a tunnel. It's built on the same frame as our standard units, roughly 160 square feet on a 20-ft and about 320 on a 40-ft, so the footprint you're placing doesn't change at all. What changes is that instead of one opening, you've got two.

That's the whole idea in one sentence. Nothing about the width, the height, or the steel is different. Only the wall at the far end is, and on a double-door it isn't a wall anymore, it's a matching pair of cargo doors, built with the same locking bars and gasket seal as the doors you already know from a standard container. Stand at either end and the doors look and operate the same way, because they're the same hardware, just mirrored onto both ends of the box.

Why two doors change how you use the box.

One door end works fine until it doesn't. On a 20-ft it's rarely a problem, the box is short enough that nothing inside is ever truly out of reach from the doors. On a 40-ft it's a different story. Load from the one end you've got, and whatever you packed in first, or whatever ends up sitting against the far wall, is the thing you have to climb over or walk the full length past to reach again.

A second door end fixes that directly, and it changes more than one habit around the box.

  • Load from either end. Pull up to whichever door is closer to where you're working instead of always circling around to the same side.
  • Reach what you need without walking the length. Nothing at the back of a 40-ft double-door is actually at the back, because the back has its own door too.
  • Pass-through access on a jobsite. Open both ends and a crew can work from opposite sides at the same time, or move a cart straight through instead of backing out the way it came in.
  • One box split between two users. Give a container two purposes, or two tenants, and hand each one their own door instead of making both share a single opening.

Think of it less as an extra feature and more as removing the one habit every single-door container forces on you: circling back around to the same opening, every single time, no matter which end of the load you actually need.

In a 40-ft especially, one door end means the thing you actually want is often the thing sitting furthest away. A second door end puts every foot of the box within reach from outside.

Who a double-door actually helps.

The clearest case is a jobsite where material needs to move through the container, not just into it and back out the same opening. Feed one end while a crew works the far side, or run a cart or hand truck straight through instead of turning it around inside a box that's only 8 feet wide.

It also earns its keep any time one steel box ends up doing two jobs at once. A business splitting inventory storage between two departments, a property with a storage need on both sides of a fence line, or a farm loading from the field on one end while pulling feed out the other. In each of those cases the alternative is either two separate containers or one container with everybody funneling through a single door, and a double-door solves it with one box instead of two.

If none of that describes your job, a standard container is simpler, is what we actually keep on hand, and does the same work for less hassle. A double-door is worth asking about specifically when a single opening is the real bottleneck, not just because two doors sounds better than one.

The honest tradeoffs.

A second door end isn't free, and that's true even before you get to sourcing one. Every cargo door is a moving part with a gasket that has to stay soft and pliable and a set of locking bars that have to throw clean. One door end means one of those to keep after. Two door ends means two, and a gasket you let go dry and cracked on the end you never look at is a leak path you won't notice until something inside is wet.

You also give something up on the build side. The solid wall on a standard container's far end is genuinely useful. It's where a shelving unit goes, where a workbench gets bolted down, where you'd frame in a wall if you were building the inside out for a shop. A double-door container doesn't have that wall to work with, because that wall is now a doorway.

That maintenance cost is the same whether the shell underneath is a 20-ft or a 40-ft. The shell size changes how much a second door end actually helps you. It doesn't change how much upkeep that second door end asks for.

Another door end is another set of seals to keep after, and one less solid wall to build against. It's worth it when pass-through access solves a real problem, not just because a second door is available.

And it is genuinely a specialty unit on our end too. We don't stock double-door containers the way we stock standard 20-ft and 40-ft boxes, so what's available, and when, depends on what we can source at the time you call.

How to actually get one.

Start with the shell. A double-door comes on the same 20-ft or 40-ft frame as our standard containers, so the first decision is the same one you'd make on either of those: how much floor space the job needs.
