Some needs have a finish line. A remodel wraps up, a season ends, the job closes out and the box goes back on the truck. This page is about the other kind: the container that shows up and then stays, because the reason for it has no date attached.
We rent long term and we are glad of the business. But the awkward part goes first, because you will work it out anyway. If a container is going to sit on your ground for years, buying it is usually cheaper, and our buy versus rent guide shows why. What a long term rental actually means here
There is no separate long term program to sign up for. It is the same rental, carried on longer. Rentals start at $165 a month, there is no contract at any length, and delivery is free within 75 road miles of the Woodlawn yard. What that buys you is a bill instead of a decision. The same flat amount every month, nothing that renews, nothing that lapses in the spring. Nobody calls you in month eleven wanting a signature.
The container arrives the way all of ours do: out on a tilt bed, set down and leveled where you point, doors on one end. We will not promise a truck tomorrow, but tell us where it is going and we will confirm a date on the phone, often within a few days.
Four reasons to rent something you could afford to buy
Buying is not automatically right just because the need is permanent. The container is one of several numbers you are running, and it can lose to a bigger one.
- The money is doing better work somewhere else. A few thousand parked in steel is a few thousand not in a truck, a hire or your own inventory. A monthly line you can plan around does not fight anything for the same dollar.
- You do not own the ground. Leased yard, rented lot, a handshake with the neighbor about the back field. Own steel on land that is not yours, and the day that changes you own a problem that has to be trucked somewhere.
- Your books would rather it was an expense than an asset. Rent goes out monthly for something you use. Buying puts an asset on the books to carry. Which suits you depends on how the business is set up, so ask your own accountant, not us.
- Nobody can say how long this runs. Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not know: not a year, not five years, just for now. Buying to solve a problem you cannot size yet is how people end up selling a container at a discount later.
The part where we tell you to buy one instead
Here is what we give up by putting this on our own rental page. The longer you keep a rented container, the better owning one looks, and there is no version of the math where that stops being true. Rent is a meter. A purchase price is a number that stops.
You do not need us to model it. Take the monthly figure we quote, multiply it by the months you honestly expect to need the thing, and set that beside the delivered price of the same size. Over a long horizon the answer gets loud. If none of the four reasons above is really yours, own it. If one of them is, the extra you pay to rent is not waste. It is what flexibility costs.
Who looks after the container while it is on rent
The simple part first. While you are renting it, the container belongs to us, which is most of the answer to who deals with what. A door that stops seating right, a seam letting weather past: that is our steel. Call us.
Yours is what goes in it and what happens around it: the lock, the contents and the ground. A unit that sits for years wants a spot that drains, because water standing under the corners turns a firm pad soft. Our foundation guide covers what a good pad looks like.
One thing to leave alone is cutting into it. Vents, doors, shelving and paint are fair to ask about, but that is a phone call first, not a grinder in your driveway. The rest is worth settling before the truck rolls. Ask us:
- Exactly what the monthly figure covers, and what it does not.
- Who you call if something on the unit needs attention.
- How much notice suits us both when you want it picked up.
- Whether a truck will still reach the spot in a year, once the site fills in.
Pick a size you will not outgrow
On a three month rental, guessing small is an annoyance. On one with no end date it is a truck. Swapping a 20 for a 40 later means a pickup, a delivery and moving everything you already stacked inside.
Size for the version of this you will have in a year, not this week. Storage fills. The 20 ft with room to spare in March is packed to the doors by fall, because a place to put things generates things to put there.
A tilt bed also wants roughly 65 ft of straight clearance for a 20 ft container and about 95 ft for a 40 ft, plus room to back in. If your approach will not take the longer box, that settles it. Our 20 versus 40 comparison works through what fits in each.
When the need ends, or when you decide to own it
Month to month cuts both ways, which is the point. When the reason for the container goes away, call and we will schedule a pickup. There is no term left to run out. And if your need turns out to have a finish line all along, that is what short term rentals are for.
